Chiesa della Concezione San Casciano dei Bagni

CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES

It’s a small chapel with a gabled roof and a XVth century travertine portal. A particular Company was responsible for the chapel. It was the Company of the Holy Conception, probably founded at the same time that the Company of Saint Anthony was founded. It was presided by the Council of Brothers, who elected a Chief Prior, a Second Prior and the Third Priors. It was the responsability of the Priors to support the Company. Their charge lasted three years. The Company managed a third Spedale, located in Pozzo. This is the only one of the three churches located inside the town walls that still preserves the original structure. Inside there are some frescoes, attributed to Pomarancio. The travertine Holy water basin, dated 1596, with the basin decorated with small snakes, that converge to its center, is quite interesting. Next to the major altar there’s the gravestone of Blessed Saint Peter, that according to legend, froze to death in 1638, in this place.
