Castel San Gimignano is a small village divided in two between the township of Colle di Val d’Elsa and San Gimignano, in the province of Siena. The village stands on the road to Volterra, on the boundary between the province of Siena and Pisa. In the part that is governed by the township of San Gimignano, one can still admire the medieval walls and an ancient code of arms. Nearby, on the road that leads to San Gimignano, stands the Prison of Ranza.
